UNICAL Students Threaten Protests Over Proposed Fees Increase

University Of Calabar (UNICAL) students set to protest against a proposed fee increment citing lack of consultation and protests starting Monday if the decision is not revoked.

One of the students, a third-year student said they decided to embark on the protest as they could not bear the hike any longer, from an increase in hotel fees to school fees.

In his words, “this issue at hand is a critical one that needs critical reasoning and understanding. The university management over the years is doing their best to ensure that the students get the best in virtually everything.

Meanwhile, we never expected the sudden proposed increase in fees, but the school management has said that it was for the good of the students, the students unanimously are not against the tireless efforts of the university management.

Our stance is that the school management should have a rethink considering the economic situation of the country. Also, not everyone can afford the payment; all we ask for is a level playing ground and affordable fees for everyone.

Fees increment is normal but anything above 10-15% increase is exploitation”, he said.

While many have called on the SUG president to resign for standing with the management to exploit the students and his inability to stand up for the students at this point in time.

Some have taken to social media with the hashtag “SayNoToUnicalFeesIncrement

Recall that on Monday the students rejected the alleged proposed tuition fee increase from between N37,000 and N39,000 to from N73,000 to N62,000 by the school management with the adoption of 60 and 40 percent mode of payment.

The students rejected the hike in Calabar during a meeting with the students’ representatives, organised by the Student’s Union Government led by the secretary of the Union, comrade Victor Egba.

Many students have described the proposed increase as “outrageous” considering the current economic hardship being faced by parents and the negative impact of COVID-19.

However, the management insists that there is a need for an increase.

This is a developing story…….
